Michael Traugott Spoke to Detroit Free Press

Professor Michael Traugott spoke to the Detroit Free Press about the implications for Michigan after the 2010 Cenus and the loss of one of the state’s seats in the House of Representatives. Michigan was the only state to see a decline in its population in the last ten years and one of only nine other states to lose seats in Congress.

Traugott explains, “These census seats are switching because of internal migration, and this internal migration to the Sun Belt is a function of job opportunities, tax laws and a little bit of better weather…For a manufacturing base state to lose population and corporate capital assets that can be taxed, that has a lot of ramifications for the school system, the road system and a lot of other infrastructure.”
